Tronsonul feroviar de la Câmpulung Moldovenesc la Valea Putnei a fost inaugurat la 9 ianuarie 1901 iar tunelul Mestecăniș I a fost inaugurat la 28 octombrie 1902 (dată la care a intrat oficial primul tren în gara Vatra Dornei).
